IAX is the preferred solution when interconnecting two Asterisk. In addition to voice cipher (see “IAX trunk and voice ciphering“) and secret based authentication, it could be interesting to bring the authentication to an upper level: RSA key verification.

Voice transport should always balance between real time and bandwidth consumption. When interconnecting two PBX in order to exchange more than one communication, it could be interesting to limit bandwidth consumption by carrying more voice samples in the same IP frame. This is what the Asterisk Inter Exchange protocol (aka IAX) is doing and gains are real.

Configuring an Asterisk server can be cumbersome for some administrators not used to unix and text file format. There are some solutions to ease this configuration process, mainly on integrated solution where a web interface is proposed. Apstel is currently proposing another solution which is interesting: « Visual Dialplan » since it is mainly based on a graphical view of the call plan.

Phone line supervision is one of the great and mandatory tools for any enterprise telephony product. Asterisk is proposing this feature based on the SIP protocol tools but each phone (or softphone) is implementing it through a proprietary approach. In addition to the supervision the line pickup tool is important and sometimes not easy to configure.
It is generally simple to supervise a phone line with the SIP toolkit, but in order to pickup the line an interaction with the PBX is required: by hitting the button near the supervised line a call should be placed with a specific prefix. The Aastra 53i phone is implementing this feature really easily and targeting the Asterisk solution. This article shows how simple it is to configure.
