Computer and telephony linkage is traditionally a tough point since PBX are real time and API used to be complex to implement. Each of both technologies have progressed on their specific path without talking to each other. In order to connect telephony systems to computers, the API should be as opened as possible which is very difficult since OS are progressing very fast and both sides are still proprietary in most of the cases. CTI requires a compromise between features available and functional requirements.

IP telephony is now relatively close to computer systems since an IP phone looks like a computer more than in the past. Most of the features are soft coded and are using standard protocol. In the case of SIP, the protocol is really simple to implement since using Internet basics like text format like in email, or similar exchanges as FTP or HTTP services¹.

Nowadays it would probably be a mistake to invest in a telephony solution not proposing a rich CTI coupling solution. The need is not always for now but such investment is for 5 to 7 years and computer application are really opened now and willing to use as much information from the external world as possible; and telephony is a very good candidate to increase productivity when well coupled with computer application. For example, a very simple application could be the one used to dial directly from his laptop any number printed on the screen, like on an email or a web page: no more mistake and some time saved. One can easily imagine some more complex application and we could be sure the next generation product will more and more integrate a way to be linked to IP telephony.
