  1. Do you already have a telephony system?
  2. Is your IP network ready for voice?
  3. Do you have analog equipment or lines?
  4. Is your voice installation split on multiple location?
  5. Are you using wireless phones on your system?
  6. Do you need a call billing feature?
  7. Are you planning an outsourcing process of the telephony system?
  8. Does telephony needs to be linked to computer systems?
  9. Are you planning to exchange voice over IP traffic with telcos or partners?
  10. Are you using a call-center?
  11. Are you monitoring or recording your phone calls?
  12. Are you using a automated call system?

6- Do you need a call billing feature?

Most of the time call billing is used on links to operators when call will be charged back; in this case the operator is generally providing a call history with the invoice. In some cases the call history can be on a computer format which eases manipulation, statistics and internal invoicing. But some organizations could require an internal call billing system which keeps track of any communication, internal and external ones.

IP telephony is distributed by default, this means communications are directly established between phones1, without flowing through a central point. If billing information are required, a central system should be informed of any start and stop time of each calls in the network. Most systems could do this but a check with vendor is important.

For external calls (to PSTN systems of Voice over IP telcos), we make all calls transit through a specific gateway either to convert signal between IP and PSTN or for security reason2.

For internal calls, the central system performing call routing (SIP proxy of H.323 gatekeeper) should be informed, we generally call these “statefull proxies”. Be careful to validate the support of this feature and the performance impact for big installations managing a lot of simultaneous calls.

Last but not least, the billing system needs sometimes to be connected to an external system and should be supported by the IP telephony solution. All combinations are not possible unfortunately, the billing solution could limit the number of telephony solution available on the market.
